Calculate the ceiling, then read the contract

Eighteen percent is the top of the first slice, not the number a firm will write on the contract.

The calculator on the contingent-fee page applies the 2021 progressive ceiling to an amount you type. The base is what was actually recovered, or the debt actually reduced, not the amount you hoped for at the start.

A firm may charge a fixed sum instead of a percentage. The ceiling does not apply to case types the opinion bars from using a contingent fee at all, including criminal defence and wage claims.
